Safe Firearm Storage
Keeping students safe is our top priority. As part of this work, we share information with families about a Michigan law (Public Act 17 of 2023) that explains how firearms should be safely stored at home. Secure firearm storage is an important way to protect children and keep our school community safe.
Michigan's secure storage law began on February 13, 2024. The goal of the law is to protect young people and reduce injuries caused by firearms. It requires firearm owners to store their firearms safely whenever a child is in the home or may come into the home.
Schools must share this information every year to help parents, caregivers, and firearm owners understand and follow the law. We encourage you to review the resources below from the Michigan Department of Education and the Michigan School Safety Initiative. These resources explain what the law requires, why secure storage is important, common questions families may have, and simple tips for storing firearms safely.
